Ahh.. Don’t you just love walking past the window display of a local deli.

When in Sydney, D. took me around to the little streets filled with unique antique shops, boutiques, cafes and my favourite.. delis.

Short for delicatessen, deli is somewhat a cross between a fast-food restaurant and a grocery store, offering a wide range of food stuff, such as GOOD coffee, cheese, sweets, sandwiches, platters, and a variety of not-so-commercial grocery items, such as dipping sauce, jams, dressings, chutneys… etc (I could go on forever…)

Interestingly enough, we popped in to a Sydney popular deli named Jones The Grocer for a quick bite and shop, and their friendly staff informed us that they have just opened up a franchise in Singapore! (Low & Behold!!!)

Tucked away in Dempsey Hill, Jones The Grocer Singapore is about three times the size of its Sydney store, with a much bigger dining area. The part that still gives me the thrill is that they have a cheese room too!

D. and I popped in a couple of weekends ago, and we were amazed at how packed it was (felt like Okka Central for a while!), and I was very pleased to see that Singaporeans were getting into this deli culture.

Deli culture is predominantly a Western one, but the success of Jones the Grocer will definitely raise the bar on the standards that we are about to expect from a decent deli. Though it will take a longer time that I expect, I hope deli culture will become an a new Singapore way of life (mainstream, that is).

Cold Rock Ice-Creamery, Singapore September 2, 2007

I first discovered Cold Rock when in Perth, and it was a breath of fresh air to our standard issue of ice-cream, sorbets and gelato. Cold Rock is famed for offering a wide range of flavours and toppings to be mixed together on a frozen granite slab.

Cold Rock opened its first outlet in Singapore last month, and tonight, I finally had the appetite to have a try. Not sure who brought the franchise here, but compared to its Australian outlets, Cold Rock Singapore has little to shout about.

Staff. Not exactly sure who is doing what. The guy (only one in the Cold Rock uniform) taking orders completely messed it up, and there were 3 other pretty ladies prancing about behind the counter. They helped to “mix” two cups of ice-cream, which wasn’t very well done. After they were done “playing” at the counter, they left. They must have been the friends of the owner. BAD. The long queue left many customers looking puzzled and pissed off.

Considering this is probably a franchise, Cold Rock Singapore lacks the zest and energy that has been part of Cold Rock Australia’s success. Well marketed as a family ice-creamery, this outlet appears cold and the layout seems far from family friendly.

It’s a shame what the franchisee has done with it.
Cold Rock Singapore has little to be desired.

My Love for Shopping Extends to Groceries August 24, 2007

As a modern day woman, it gives me great pleasure in being able to indulge in a weekly trip to the supermarket. Yes. I do find it an indulgence.

I have to admit. I don’t cook as much as I want to. I don’t eat as much as I want to. I don’t do a lot of stuff that I want to. At the same time, I cannot complain, because I have the luxury of a live-in helper who shops, cooks and cleans for me, leaving my partner and I with so much less to deal with.

Every fortnight, or before we throw a party, my partner and I make trips to the supermarket, where aisles and aisles of sinful delights await my arrival. I walk through them with the same enthusiasm as a child in Candy Empire (which I also happen to love).

I’m not sure what it is. Do I actually like grocery shopping? Or do I like the idea of grocery shopping? It is probably both.

Both questions seem to boil down to the fact that I feel more of a woman when I shop, for mundane daily needs such as mosquito coils, toilet fresheners, toilet paper and handpicking groceries that will feed the household.

Maybe it’s the joy of knowing that I made some sort of contribution to the household, to compensate the fact that I don’t have to do much around the house.
